A Landscape Beyond Compare
173 Culnacraig isn’t just a cottage; it’s a gateway to one of the last great wildernesses in Europe. The house itself is remotely and beautifully situated, the last of only four houses in the tranquil Culnacraig valley. You’ll find us at the end of a half-mile track (house 173 was named for being the last croft in this corner of the Coigach peninsula), with nothing between you, the mountains, and the sea.
This is a place of profound peace and special beauty, formally recognised as part of the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Ben Mor Coigach Reserve and the North West Highlands Geopark. The waters of Loch Broom, visible from the house, are also protected within the Wester Ross Marine Protection Area.
Ben Mor Coigach
Mountains, Sea, and Sky
The Mountain: The iconic peak of Ben Mor Coigach (743m) rises directly behind the cottage. A hike to its summit rewards you with one of the finest, most breathtaking views in all of the North West Highlands.
The Shore: A 10-minute walk is all that separates you from the rocky shore. Here you can explore fascinating formations of ancient Torridonian sandstone and watch for our neighbours—otters, seals, gannets, and countless other seabirds are frequently seen.
The Glens & Burns: Mountain streams (burns) cascade down from Ben Mor through wooded ravines, creating countless waterfalls and secret pools, offering an oasis for local birdlife.
Holiday Escape
Explore the Coigach Peninsula
The Coigach peninsula juts out towards the Minch, offering clear-day views to the distant Outer Hebrides. While our own shore is rocky, the area boasts several small, idyllic sandy beaches at Acheninver and near Reiff.
A little further afield, the large sandy beach at Achnahaird provides spectacular views of the Assynt and Coigach hills. From there, you can take the stunning single-track coastal road north through Inverpolly, Inverkirkaig, and Lochinver, or plan a day trip to the spectacular Handa Island, one of Europe’s most important seabird sanctuaries.
